The Dells District is part of the larger Oak Cliff area, which was established as a separate town in 1887 and later annexed by Dallas in 1903. The Dell's District is situated southwest of the Jefferson/Westmoreland intersection, making it a convenient and desirable location within Oak Cliff. Its history highlights the area's growth and adaptation while maintaining a charming, established neighborhood feel. The Dells District Neighborhood Association was founded to foster community within the Dells District and server as an avenue for civic engagement.
Early Development
Tudor cottages, typical of the era with steep gabled rooflines, brick archways, and porches, were built from 1929 to the early 1930s. Originally, the street corners at the entry to the neighborhood were marked by rock arches, but these were lost during the widening of Westmoreland Road.
Post WWII Growth
Development slowed until after World War II, when traditional ranch-style houses were built on the remaining lots. These homes, featuring pale brick, limestone, or a combination of both, were designed to blend seamlessly with the older Tudor cottages while maintaining a similar scale.
Today
The Dell's District is a charming enclave in a wooded area, bordering the riverbed of Coombs' Creek. The creek flows through Stevens Park Golf Course and other Oak Cliff developments to the east and north. The neighborhood features established trees and is considered a great location for first-time home buyers.
